Data Resources
Many social science instruction and research activities focus on the analysis of statistical data from sources such as public opinion surveys, censuses, financial indicators, administrative and electoral records. The StatLab has a long history of collaboration with the Social Science Libraries and Information Services in providing a wide range of support for data users at Yale.
Locating Data
StatCat includes records for numeric datasets in the Yale Social Science Data Archive, as well as datasets in the Yale University Library and on the Internet. Records are constantly being added for more datasets held on CD, through subscription databases, and available free on the Web. For help finding, using and accessing data, please see the StatCat: Help Using Data page.
The StatLab offers programming and extracting consultation for preparing and analysing statistical data. A variety of software packages are available for recoding, transferring, and checking data prior to analysis. See the consultants' schedule for times to come into the StatLab for help. Detailed help on using data with SPSS and SAS is available online.
Help in locating and acquiring appropriate data is available by contacting the Data Librarian (email stefan.kramer@yale.edu) in the Social Science Library. For announcements about social science statistical data resources for Yale University, check the SocSci-Data blog. Also see our Data and Statistics in the social sciences subject guide.
ICPSR
Yale's primary source of social science data is the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). ICPSRs extensive catalog of data holdings may be searched at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu. Data and codebooks can be downloaded directly from the ICPSR website. If help is needed parsing the codebook or data, please see a statlab consultant for assistance.
Public Opinion Data
SSLIS maintains a Public Opinion Subject Guide with numerous links to helpful resources including the Roper Center for Public Opinion, the Public Opinion Poll Question Database from the Odum Institute at Univ of North Carolina, the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press data archive and ICPSR.
Census Data
The Social Science Library has a U.S. Census of Population and Housing subject guide. For more information on available US and international government documents please see Yale's Government Documents and Information Center website.
