TEACHING IN THE STATLAB FACILITIES

The main StatLab facilities in Urban Hall (140 Prospect St) and in Rosenkranz Hall (115 Prospect) may be scheduled for sessions requiring statistical software and hands-on use of the workstations. Lectures and non-statistical sessions should be scheduled at other locations if possible. Use the online form to schedule times in the StatLab.

Main Classroom in Urban Hall

The Main StatLab classroom features 25 student workstations and 1 instructor's workstation, overhead projection, and printing service. All workstations are equipped with the full suite of statistical software found in all the StatLab facilities on campus.

Classroom in Rosenkranz Hall

The StatLab manages a second electronic classroom/lab located in the Political Science building, Rosenkranz Hall, Room 01 (115 Prospect St). The classroom features 14 student workstations and 1 instructor workstation with annotation, dual projection, a large group study screen and a full suite of audio visual technical equipment. Seminar tables provide seating for 20. The workstations are equipped with the full suite of statistical software found in all the StatLab facilities. Primary use of the facility is for classes using computers during scheduled class sessions, with priority to Political Science classes. Note that the building is closed on evenings and weekends.

During the Class

While a class is in session, instructors have the right to prohibit others from using the facility. Sometimes instructors allow other students to use the computers in the back of the classroom if not all of the workstations are needed. The consultants have signs to put on the door warning people that a class is in progress.

Software on the StatLab Machines

Be sure the version of a statistical package that you use for teaching is the version we run at the StatLab. See the complete List of statistical software. If you have Teaching Assistants, please be sure they have enough experience with the statistical package that they can help students finish their assignments. Assignments and exercises should be supported by adequate software instruction and consulting provided by the TAs. Please let the StatLab know in advance if your course will not have adequate support for software consulting or if specific support is needed.

StatLab Annex

The StatLab Annex in the Social Science Library (140 Prospect, Lower Level) has 12 Statlab workstations and printing service. The Annex is not reserved for classes and can be used when the main Lab and Rosenkranz have restricted access.

Storing Data on the StatLab Servers

Instructors should contact Themba Flowers (stathelp@yale.edu) to set up an account and disk allocation on the StatLab server where you can store files for your specific course use. The CLASSES files are stored on the I: drive of the StatLab workstations. Students connected to the Yale campus network are able to access the files in the CLASSES directory of the StatLab NT server. Software can not be run remotely, but access to files via the campus network is supported.

NO FOOD OR DRINKS AT ANY TIME.
